I went back to the warehouse district for Artcrawl 2011. sadly, i wasnt expecting to see alot of the same work i had seen the year prior. Considering that last year was my first official artcrawl, i expected things to be a little different. The work was good, but nothing i hadnt seen before. I did run into Jimmy Houston and some other familiar faces. Next year i will have to spread out a little bit more.

The 6th Annual Winter Holiday Art Market (WHAM) was a few weeks back. It coincides with the blockbuster ArtCrawl right before Thanksgiving. Winter Street was packed on the opening night of the event. There was also a solo show downstairs in the Spacetaker Gallery. Quite honestly, i was more impressed with the work i saw here than what i saw the following day in the warehouse district. One guy in particular, Vincent Fink, caught my eye. Be on the watch for this guy. trust me.

a friend of mine recently asked me why the magazine was M.I.A. And i honestly didn't have a legit answer. truth be told....I'm a horrible multi-tasker for a lack of better words. when i started investing my time in the the magazine, so many other important things around me started suffering. Its like i can only focus on one major thing at a time unfortunately. I have so many pictures from shows i have been to, interviews from artist, and submissions, that are honestly sitting on my computer. But i promise to open the flood gates soon. Coming up this weekend the 6th Annual Winter Holiday Art Market (WHAM) this Friday November 18th as well as the 19th Annual Houston ArtCrawl on Saturday. so i will be busy. This weekend the Texas Contemporary art fair is making its debut at the George R. Brown convention center. It is a 3 day event, and IAM will be there covering the event and taking to the artist involved. If you have not purchased your tickets, they are still available. The show runs through Sunday and open daily until 7ish. I got a chance to preview some of the work , and trust me, you WILL NOT be disappointed.

Non-profit organization has reached 1.5 million people through art

Houston, TX, August 18, 2011- For more than 11 years the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) has been Houston’s leading developer of community based public art and cultural programming and continues to make milestones while touching the lives of over 1.5 million individuals. Research shows that MOCAH is the only museum of its kind, specializing in public art, raising social awareness (with an emphasis on the youth), and participating in a global exchange.

This year, MOCAH has extended its brand to include international public art and universal influence. In 2008, Texas French Alliance for the Arts (TFAA) in partnership with the Texas Children’s Cancer Center and Hematology Center (TCCC) invited two French artists to come to Houston and create two pieces of artwork with the children undergoing treatment at the TCCC.

This year, the exchange continued when TFAA sent Houston artists, Daniel-Kayne, and President and CEO of MOCAH, Reginald Adams to the The Leon Bernard Cancer Center in Lyon, France from June 12- July 4. When the artists arrived at their destination, they proceeded to work with the cancer children at their respective hospitals in order to create a lasting piece of artwork for the hospitals.

“I’m honored that MOCAH is now touching the lives of people worldwide,” said Adams. “Just in the past year, we’ve kicked off "The Art of Culture,"(our exhibition series), created a mural for the Earth Day Festival and the Bayou City Arts Festival. And now we’re expanding to not only have a statewide presence, but also an international presence with projects in both Austin and France."

In addition to their public art project in France, The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) has recently commissioned MOCAH President, Reginald Adams, to design a new public art project for the soon to be constructed Cultural & Heritage Facility located in Austin's historic East side community.

With over 120 public art projects in the city of Houston, an eco-art partnership with fashion retailer Charming Charlie, and new programs and events being incorporated monthly, MOCAH is just getting started in their goal to use art as a tool for raising social awareness and community development.

What more can i say about the past year. i have meet some great artist, seen some awesome shows, and visited a few amazing galleries and exhibitions. i have to admit that i am not where i wanted to be at this point but i am making great progress. This has been a labor of love, learning experience, something with endless possibilities and even something i wanted to give up. i found out that maintaining the momentum is probably the most difficult part of this endeavor. a lot of this writes itself but it pushing and expanding this is what makes it hard.

Maintaining your interest as well is just as hard. i know first hard how easy it is to glance over something and not think about it again. so i am working on ways to make this more interesting. Plenty thanks to those who do read and keep up with the blog. in the next few months i will be working on a major art convention as well as interviewing many new artist. I am also aiming for a new years art show to coincide with issue #4. wish me luck.

the very first show i went to when i started this last August was The Summer Studio show. it was safe to me, because it was a place i had frequented before and i felt i could blend in without looking like a weirdo. well, it was on that trip that i first ran into Monica Seibbert, Raul Gonzalez, and Sapphire Williams. fast forward to last Saturday..I walk into the G Glallery for the first time to see a show that i had not done any research on and guess who i see? Ms Sapphire Williams! Seems like she kept herself very busy over the last year. Pixelated Bunch was a show put together by her and explores the effect technology has on own lives. the show run through July 21st.

artist Robert Hodge is a master of multiple medias, including music. his mixed media works reflect what is going on in the community and infuse a lot of historic, musical, and symbolic references.

Hodge is a busy artist who works very closely with other local Texan artist such as Lovie Olivia, Reuben Levi, Jesse Young, and Greg Carter. His work has been featured in Project Row House, Premium Goods, and many more.

I have turned to Hodge for his vast knowledge on artsit (upcoming and legendary) in the Houston area. Please believe this will not be the last time you will see his name mentioned on this blog.

i have a bad habit for frequenting familiar places and artist (im breaking that habit, promise). this past weekend, i went to the Heights to work on this. the first stop was Nau-Haus Gallery where artist Sandra York was having her show "True of False". we got out there pretty late, but there was still a decent sized crowd outside. i wish i had the opportunity to meet Mrs. York, her work was right up my alley. (nothing i could afford yet, but the type of abstract work i like).

artMRKT Productions, the Brooklyn-based organizer of artMRKT San Francisco and the upcoming artMRKT Hamptons, is proud to announce its inaugural Texas Contemporary art fair to take place in Houston from October 20 - 23, 2011 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, with a theme focused on energy and sustainability.

An early preview of the national participating gallery list for Texas Contemporary includes ACME (Los Angeles), Baer Ridgway Exhibitions (San Francisco), Catharine Clark Gallery (San Francisco), Fredric Snitzer (Miami), Inman Gallery (Houston), Lennon Weinberg (New York City), Moody Gallery (Houston), Rena Bransten Gallery (San Francisco), Samuel Freeman (Santa Monica), Sicardi Gallery (Houston), Texas Gallery (Houston) and Wade Wilson Art (Houston), with new galleries coming on board weekly.

Currently in the process of accepting applications from galleries and Texas-based artists for exclusive showcase in solo booths, fair directors Max Fishko and Jeffrey Wainhause, in collaboration with Houston-based dealers Kerry Inman of Inman Gallery and Fredericka Hunter of Texas Gallery, are guiding local programming and production elements of the fair, as well as the development of the solo booth programming based on the inaugural theme.

i first came across Julie Zarate work at one my first events last August. she had a few painings in a corner which everyone seemed to be drawn to. almost a year later, i happened to run into the artist at a different event and was instantly able to recognize her work. Now thats making an impression. Julie creates amazingly detailed portraits, mostly of women, as well as small 3d works of art she labels as "assemblage". All great work worth checking out.

PrintHouston 2011 artworks created by the “Queens of Creativity” to benefit MOCAH youth programs

HOUSTON, TX, June 14, 2011 – On June 25th, 2011 MOCAH’s “Queens of Creativity” (QOC) will host an opening reception from 6pm-9pm at MOCAH Studios located at 908 Wood St., Suite #150, Houston, TX 77002.

Continuing with MOCAH’s mission of utilizing art to bring about cultural awareness, the non-profit organization has teamed up with PrintMatters for PrintHouston 2011. In its first year, the print-inspired series of lectures, workshops and gallery showings will be held throughout the City of Houston, with one of their exhibits to include the Queens of Creativity.

The Queens of Creativity have been chosen by PrintMatters to represent the cardinal sins or “deadly sins” derived from the early 14th Century, to include ANGER, LUST, and ENVY,---sins considered to be the origin of other sins in humanity’s tendency to “fall,” according to the Catholic Culture and belief.

The exhibit will feature each Queen’s wood-carved self portrait, translated into a beautiful, mounted print. The exhibit will run from June 25th through July 17th and a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of their artwork at the event will benefit the youth-based art programs at MOCAH.

The exhibiting artists will include: MOCAH Co-Founder, Rhonda Radford Adams, Laneya Jacob, Sam Turner, Cherry Meekins, and Elisabet Gonzalez-Barranco, Anne Johnson and guest artist Stacy Robinson-Newton. Founder Reginald Adams will also be a participating artist.

The members of the Queens of Creativity are each uniquely artistic, eclectic and inspired by the goal in mind to support the community through the arts. Their collaboration with PrintMatters: PrintHouston 2011 series comes from their desire to “become a global alliance of creative professionals that use art to support outreach, community service, and professional development,” said Stacy Newton, MOCAH Marketing Director and one of the participating artists.

i get invites and friend request from all type of establishments. most of which, i have never heard or seen before. the latest was from MECA (Multicultural Education and Counseling Through the Arts).

MECA has been creating a brighter future for the community of Houston since 1977.

MECA is a community-based non-profit organization committed to the healthy development of under-served youth and adults through arts and cultural programming, academic excellence, support services and community building.

MECA programs help promote self-esteem, discipline, and academic achievement, while instilling a sense of direction and a commitment to cultural diversity. For over 33 years, MECA has helped families and youth gain a positive sense of themselves, their community and their culture.

they recently had a show featuring juvenile offenders. unfortunately, i missed the show, but i was able to visit the building and see hallways full of art, murals, and sculptures. it was beautiful. almost as if i were at PVA. it was great to see artwork that reflected so much culture. it is a very great cause and i am glad i was able to see it.

2011 ESCAPISTS AT CAROLINE COLLECTIVE

i was unable to attend the opening last Friday for this show, but from what i hear, the turnout was pretty strong. the show features art from Nubia Gala Seibert, Zak Vasquez and you guessed it...Raul Gonzalez. dude keeps me working and believe it or not, he has a solo show here next week i believe. for those who have not been Caroline Collective, it is a small gallery downtown across the street from the HMAAC at 4820 Caroline. it is worth checking out when you have some free time.

this was the more interesting of the two shows at the CAM because this show was put together by teens around the city. i remember when we had "rinse, wash, repeat" at the CAM during our senior year in high school. unfortunately, for a lot of these young artist, this may be the last time they get there work in a museum/gallery like the CAM. hopefully this helps push them to create and show work.

on our last stop this past Friday, my sidekick and i visited Winter Street to see featured artist Raul Gonzalez and the Montrose Art Society exhibit "Fun and Games".

needless to say, i have yet to be disappointed by any of their shows. most of the time there is the a new theme and brand new work. and they play up to their themes...in the middle of the gallery was a table were people could play cards, connect 4, and checkers. there is was even a set up for Tag using name tags. im a big fan of audience interaction, and these shows tend to bring it.

we got to the show as soon as it opened, so we did not get the chance to catch the crowds. but MAS usually packs the house. im glad we were able to check it out.

The Museum of Cultural Arts Houston to Host Public Art Camp for Middle and High School Students Slated for June

MPAC Campers Will Work to Produce a Site Specific Public Art Project During the Summer

Beginning June 6th through July 1st, a mixture of 20 middle school and high school students will work alongside MOCAH’s professional artists to design and produce a public art project within a specified community in Houston.

“The 4-week intensive art camp (known as MPAC) allows students to hone their art skills and creativity with the use of their own hands, give back to the community through the arts, and work with highly skilled art professionals,” said Reginald, Founder of MOCAH.

Additionally, students will be given a guided tour which offers an exploration of some of Houston’s most historic communities, while also viewing MOCAH’s collection of community based art projects. Together, students will share artistic ideas, perspectives, and values working to develop and enhance their own creativity.

Criteria for participation in MPAC:

• Must be currently enrolled in Middle School or High School (Ages 14-19)

• Minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5

• Completed application

• Completed medical release form

• 1 Letter of Recommendation from a Teacher/Principal or Community Leader

• $50 non-refundable deposit per child (to reserve space)

• Cost: $800.00 (for 4 week session)

MOCAH Creates Eco-Art with Recycled Fashion from Charming Charlie

Charming Charlie and MOCAH Partner to create Artwork that Blings

At the start of this year, The Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) formed a partnership with Charming Charlie that involves reusing slightly damaged jewelry, clothing and accessories from local Charming Charlie stores to create unique, embellished pieces of artwork at MOCAH. The eco-art partnership has been a huge success, inspiring a fresh take on traditional art while promoting environmental awareness.

Patty Foahdouli, Marketing Director at Charming Charlie said, “We thought what better way to recycle our Charming Charlie bling, than to transform it into works of art and MOCAH is a great partner to help us achieve that goal.”

Artwork that blings, is exactly the end result of the jewelry-infused artwork. From adorned lamps to sculptured masks and bedazzled, encrusted corporate logos, the opportunities are endless and many of the lasting masterpieces are created monthly at the MOCAH Face 2 Face 3D Workshop.

“I couldn’t think of a more ideal partner for our workshops,” said Reginald Adams, founder of MOCAH, “We’re able to show people of all ages that beautiful and creative art can be produced from broken and discarded jewelry. Opposed to it going in the trash to landfills - we have created art programming that families, individuals and groups can experience.”

The Face 2 Face Workshops take place monthly and offers artist and non-artist alike the chance to learn exciting and cool mixed media sculpture techniques in a fun and non-threatening environment. Guests are guided in creating a personal mold of their face and creating a custom mask enhanced with paint and embellished with jewelry.

In April, MOCAH hosted a workshop on behalf of Big Brothers and Big Sisters Houston to create sculptured masks to be auctioned off at the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Annual Big Black Tie Gala. This event not only offered the adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”) an opportunity to bond in a creative environment, but also helped raise funds for this paramount organization. The 3D masks were auctioned off at the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Annual Big Black Tie Ball on April 29th with proceeds benefiting the organization.

FRIDA FESTIVAL 2011 "Viva La Vida"

at East End Gallery this past weekend, there was Frida Festival 2011. a fun event where artist pay homage to the most famous unibrow in history...Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. not only in art and imagery of the artist, but many of the people in attendance dressed up like Kahlo and paid tribute to her and her many influences on art.

while at the show i ran into artist Julie Zarate. i had not met her before, but i remembered her work from a show i went to last August. She had a lot of work for sale, but i had no cash. I am determined to buy some of her work.

i also met artist Magda Bowen selling art at her booth.

this was stop 2 on our cross city gallery tour. it was a lively atmosphere with music playing and fresh food being cooked. too bad we could not stay long. This Thursday evening East End Gallery is hosting "Exploring Frida Kahlo" which will be an continuation and follow-up to this opening exhibit.

Rauls' motto is "work harder". those words fit him because he is honestly one of the hardest working artist i have met. if i had the work ethic Raul had, Indigo would probably be an international publication by now. Since the beginning of the year, i have been to at least 5 of Raul shows. He has already been in about a dozen this year and already has quite a few more lined up.

In his project, the Super Mario Bros. game, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, is no longer bound to the television screen and becomes interactive in a new environment. The emphasis of Andreas' thesis was on the process of matching CG elements into live-action footage.

It seems like every week I am being introduced to a new event. a few Saturdays ago it was "Midtown Art in the Park". basically it is was a smaller outdoor version of the artcrawl. i was able to catch up with old friends and meet new artist. food vendors and live bands were all out, trying to make the day better for those attending. the Main Street art crawl happened to be taking place that weekend also.

I have known Reuben since high school and since then, he has remained one of my most trusted friends. he is honestly one of the most talented and smartest people I know. When i approached him with my idea for an art gallery, he was the one who suggested an art blog. when i talked to him about expanding the blog, he was the one who suggested the magazine. i have been waiting for his schedule to clear up so i can have a sit down with him and discuss what has been going on with him, his art, and his clothes.

GRITS….What was the inspiration for that?

Long time ago, I had clothing line that kind of fizzled out. I wasn’t really trying to do another one but I felt a lot of clothing stores here were catering too much towards brands that were not reflective of our culture. You would go to the store and see California and New York brands, but nothing that was truly for the south. There were a lot of clothes that were heavily influenced by East or West coast culture, but nothing really for the 3^rd coast. So I wanted to make something that had that “southern flavor” to it, but design wise could compete with any of those lines from the coast.

So I tried to come up with a name, and when I came across the word “Grits”, it embodied what I was looking for. Something that was synonymous with the south.

You have a lot of hand drawn elements in you artwork; can you talk a little about your artistic process?

Its not really a “process” to me. It’s just the way I kind of grew up doing things. Some people are real good at going in and doing things on computer, I like things that are not perfect. I like looking at certain artwork which you can see those minor imperfections. There is an organic feel to it, a bit of character that hand drawing provides.

Explain how you got involved with the Kweli cover?

A friend of mine that I have been collaborating with for the last five years got approached about doing the cover and he hit me up. We already had some earlier work that we had done and he wanted to use it for the cover and we submitted that. And they chose it. From there I did some additional illustrations on the inside to go along with the cover art.

Does music influence your creative process? Or is it just work music in the background?

I think the music I grew up on has a influence on the what I decide to use for my clothing, such as different sayings and lyrics. The music I listen to now doesn’t necessarily influence me like that, but from a cultural aspect music has definitely influenced me.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment so far as an artist?

I know some people would think it’s the CD cover, but it is having the courage to start Grits. A lot of people talk about what they “want to do”, but not many people actually go out and do it.

Do you have any dream projects? If you had unlimited resources or budget, what would you, as an artist, like to do?

EVERYTHING!! If I had the ability to and resources to do whatever I dreamed, why limit myself to just one thing? I would like to do EVERYTHING?

The KAWS book published by The Aldrich and Skira Rizzoli features a retrospective look into the artist’s successful work. Among the work shown is KAWS’ early poster re-appropriations as well as some of his toys created with MEDICOM TOY. You may have seen his work in Complex magazine and his work with Kanye West and N.E.R.D. This is a great addition to my "artistic inspirations" library. As a matter of fact, I used some of the layout work for the magazine.

HATER ART SHOW #2

i had the opportunity to check out the Hater Magazine Art show at Winter Street Studios...with my wife. the art work that was there was great, but i was disappointed by how small of a show it was. i was very impressed by the work that was there. even my wife ( who is not into art) enjoyed herself.

maybe this was planned, or they just didn't account for it, but the show was on the last Friday of the month and who those who don't know (like me) but Critical Mass takes place on the last Friday of every month. before we could really settle in and enjoy the show, the small room was overtaken by hundreds of thirsty cyclist. but it was all good.

recently, i got a chance to catch up with my friend Patrick Renner. he and another artist, Rachelle Vasquez, recently had a slide presentation at the Contemporary Arts Museum showing some of his old work. i do not know what all is involved, but to be able to fill a room of people to see old slides of your work at the CAM..is major to me. every seat was taken and everyone was attentive. i had to sit on the floor, but i was more upset to find out he had all these great images of his work that i couldve used for his layout and he didnt lend me any. but thats another story.

i came into this with big dreams and zero expectations. i will be the first to admit there is still A LOT that i dont know. if it werent fot the artist i have come across and facebook, i may still be frequenting the MFA and CAM. But i am learning. i am still struggling to break out of my comfort zone and approach those artist i look up too. i still get nervous when i am about to interview someone, even a long time friend.

i really have great intentions with this. when i started, it was with the objective of showing people how great of an art city Houston is. though i have kind of broadened my search, i am still committed to Houston artist. im not in it for the money (because im definitely not making any). im not here to exploit any artist or "cheapen" their work. as an artist, if you feel that me blogging about you or doing an interview with you will do so, i dont want you. after talking to a fellow art blogger, i realized there are hundreds of young artist dying for that little bit of recognition. those are the people i want. those are the people who see my vision.

i am dedicated to making this thing as great as possible. God know where will take me or who this may help, but im learning and i know my work is not in vain.

ARTILLI - "GIVE UP" INTERVIEW

a few years back when i worked for FedEx and had to drive around Midtown and at one particular drop i saw these wheat pasted images. it was funny to me because it said GIVE UP and had an image of a razor blade....clever stuff. almost five years later, GIVE UP has become huge and expanded way beyond the Houston city limits. A lot of the posters have been taken down or have faded away but the impact is still felt. it was my pleasure to speak to GIVE UP about his work.
How long have you been doing this?

i started doing GIVE UP in late 2000 or early 2001 after taking a couple years off from traditional graffiti.

Is “give up” a team effort or is it just you?

i do it all myself.

How would you describe your style?

that's still a difficult concept for me. since it straddles the lines of photography, collage, and print. and, again, the art couldn't exist without each of those elements. but visually i would say it's generally fairly dark and gritty.

Where do you get the ideas for your imagery

i try not to force anything. if i'm not feeling particularly creative one month, i don't try to push it. but then sometimes my mind will be swirling like a storm and i just have to get it all out as fast as possible. i shoot all the photos that the work is built around myself. so i'm always shooting. whether i'm just shooting random things that i think might turn into something later, or i'm setting out with a specific finished image in mind. being that a lot of my work could be considered dark or threatening or apathetic it's almost like a therapeutic release, as opposed to other less constructive outlets. sometimes i'm just trying to get outside of my own head.

Where do you get your inspiration?

a lot of the work from the last couple years has had a lot of organic themes to it. i think there is a lot of beauty and peacefulness in nature, but there is also a lot of brutality and terror on the more animalistic/survival side of it. and even if there isn't an organic element within a particular piece, i hope it still conveys both of those feelings. as an appreciation of something beautiful that at the same time acknowledges a less safe side and the temporal nature of things. from a process perspective, i assemble and collage all the elements of a particular piece using a photocopier and scissors in the manner of early punk and hard core fliers, so i have to give credit to all of those early bands using photocopy and cut 'n paste out of necessity. as well other artists who's work has stuck with me like hermann nitsch, francis bacon, stephen kasner, and so on.

A lot of your imagery can viewed as shocking and controversial, what exactly is the message that you are trying to send?

there isn't one specific message and any art i think is open to interpretation. but whether it's a threat or a challenge or an affirmation or something more personal and self referential can change from piece to piece or even within the same piece. i don't think that at this point i'm particularly trying to shock anyone, but more reflect what i see and/or want to see.

Is your work premeditated or do you just go out guerilla style and post things wherever you can?

the work doesn't really exist the same without the context of the street, so i'm always looking for new spots. but for the most part i just post up what fits best as i come across it. very few pieces are spot specific.

Do you consider yourself a graffiti artist?

no, i do not. i have too much respect for graffiti and real writers to consider gluing posters to things graff.

What are your thoughts about the current graffiti scene

i have friends that are writers and i really enjoy each time i see something new up whether its a hand style or a throw up or a full piece, but really i'm pretty far removed from the graffiti scene. haven't seen a lot of crossing out lately, and people are taking good advantage or available real estate. so i'd say things are pretty strong right now.

Have you done much or any commercial work?

i do art and design work for bands for time to time. mostly more metal and hard core stuff. tour posters, album covers, etc. and a few things for some skateboard companies. it feels pretty good to think that someone would want what i'm creating visually to be attached to what they're doing aurally.

What came first, the clothes or the posters?

definitely the posters. the tshirts and stuff really aren't my main focus. but my stuff is pretty print specific, and i couldn't keep turning people down when they asked me to make them a shirt.

How is the clothing and merchandising industry?

i don't know that the level or volume that i print tshirts at would really garner me inclusion in the clothing industry. i really just print a handful of shirts if there is a design that feels conducive to that application and if i think there might be any interest. it just seems that at this point the larger percentage of my audience is more prone to purchasing a shirt than they are a print.

Have you have any moments where you were hassled by the police?

i've been really lucky that i haven't gotten into any mentionable trouble since transitioning to the GIVE UP stuff from traditional graffiti.

How have people reacted to your artwork?

a lot of times it's hard to judge a reaction other than seeing the work slashed on the street. but thanks now to being online for a little while, most of what i hear directly is pretty positive. but i think any kind of response is positive because to me it means that people are at least noticing.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?

i feel really fortunate to be able to support myself off of being an artist, but i wouldn't consider it a job in any sense. and if it ever turned into that for me, i would have to reconsider my entire program and motivation. but really i enjoy most aspects of it, and i think that's what keeps me going. from the conception and creation, to the process of printing and execution, to the street application. none would exist without the other, any if any of the elements became a chore or distasteful i don't think i'd be able to continue.

Do you feel your work reaches out to people?

i think that making the work public seeks an audience more actively than maybe waiting on a gallery invitation. but ultimately the work is fairly personal and any reaction or feeling that someone wants to attach to it is up to their own interpretation.

When I was a youngster, the only available "playhouses" for us kids were leftover boxes from kitchen appliances or if you were lucky enough to have a handy dad, he might actually build a rough hewn one. Worst case scenario, we draped blankets over the backs of chairs and created a fort. Years later, some of my more spoiled friends had large plastic ones, often pink with ornate gingerbread-like trim in which we had tea with our dolls. There were some that resembled barns with the split front door, but there were nothing like these.

In 2009 David Lamolla Kristiansen, who studied Architecture at the Politechnical University of Catalunya, founded SmartPlayhouse. Italy based design studio, ToDo, has brilliantly turned that e-mail spam into purchasable and customizable wallpaper or wall coverings under the name "Spamghetto".

To promote the shorts sale at fashion retail store Superette, the New Zealand ad agency, DDB Auckland, turned unwitting thighs into billboards by creating benches with reverse embossed lettering that when sat upon created an impression reading "Short shorts on sale Superette"
