DANIEL-KAYNE INTERVIEW
On the eve of his show at the MAC in Dallas, Daniel Kayne and I were supposed to have a brief discussion about his work and concepts leading to that night. We finally met up at "The Temple" to talk about everything; life, art, and...Fiji water. During my hour there, a lot of thought provoking questions were asked and I learned a lot about Daniel Kayne, society, and even myself.
When I first heard "The Temple", I assumed that we were meeting at a church or synagogue. Low and behold, "The Temple" is another name for Daniels' studio space perched along the outer rim of downtown Houston with a great view of our city's skyline. The space itself is an artist sanctum. With its large white walls and a melodic wind chime hanging from the window that frames the convention center, someone could retreat, meditate, and develop ideas. Just like they would if they were at a place of worship.
In the middle of the room was a setup for an upcoming auditory experience and cases of Fiji water. Towards the back of the Temple were a few pieces from prior shows, a large gong from his 48hr installation, and an aloe plant which has shared the space with Daniel since he moved in. Before we officially started the interview, I was treated to a few beats of the gong and view of the 5 o'clock traffic 59 as Daniel flew his metal flag from the Temple window.
So you went to the Glassell?
I took a couple of class at Glassell, I did not graduate from there. But it was a good experience for me. Especially painting because i had not really painted before so it helped me push that area.
What pushed you or stimulated your art career?
I think it was attending the school of Visual art (Glassell).
Is there a particular medium that you like to work with?
I love to silk screen, and I would like to do something with that, probably something like wheat pasting or something like that. "Who inspires you?....someone other thank friends or family?"
Me: (At a lost for words) Uh...I never thought about that.
I like Albert Einstein and Marcus Aurelius. Einstein because he was a funny cat who had a brilliant mind, but he had problems like everyone else. He inspired me to create a series of silk screens.
What influences you and your current art state? Also, what you trying to say or do with your artwork?
For me, at this point, there is an intention with my efforts. The intention with all my energy is to try to spark or create a little ripple that ignites the consciousness of the people who see my work. My spirituality is major influence on me. I'm on a mission to create works that stimulate cultural norms, and make paradigm shifts.
Is that what you are trying to do with all this water?
Yes, I want to create the type of ripples that get people asking themselves "What the FUCK are we doing?" I am to create a paradigm shift on how we see water...where that water has been and where it will be after we die? We are such an advance society and yet we allow these companies to control our more basic yet essential resource. There is an irony that these companies package this precious resource in the most unsustainable ways; dig it up from these springs, use water to manufacture the bottles they use to put them in, and ship them around the world.
Think about this, we are 60-65% water, so are we made of the same water that dinosaurs drank and the same water that was in bodies of Kings or Queens? Are we all interconnected through history?
What do you think I should do? Trust me, There is a big finale to my current water project. stay tuned....
We will Daniel
